What Is Finasteride and How Does It Work?

What is Finasteride? This is a question that has been asked by many men when they receive a prescription for it. Marketed under the brand name, Propecia, it is a prescription only medication that is used to stop, or even reverse hair loss due to male pattern baldness. Sold under the name, Proscar, in a stronger dosage, it is also used to treat an enlarged prostate.

Finasteride is usually a last resort attempt to keep from losing one’s hair to male pattern baldness. It is taken internally in the form of a pill. It is believed to work by blocking the formation of the male hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT has been shown to bond to the hair follicles and choke them out, leading to hair loss.

Studies were conducted over a period of five years that showed increased hair growth in 48 percent of patients taking the drug. Another 42 percent showed no change, with only 10 percent losing more hair. This is compared to a full 75 percent of men in the control group who lost hair during the five years of the study.

A smaller study was conducted on women who were postmenopausal and experiencing hair loss. The results were inconclusive, but did not show any benefit for women. It has been linked with a specific birth defect in women of childbearing age who simply handled the drug. Therefore, it should not be touched by females of childbearing age.

As with any medication, the potential exists for one to experience side effects. The most common were decreased sex drive, decreased ejaculate, and enlargement of the breasts. Most reported that the side effects were minor enough that they did not consider stopping the medication.

If one is experiencing thinning hair and does not want to undergo surgical intervention in the form of hair transplants, finasteride is likely to be a viable option. It works to block the formation of the hormone that has been linked most closely with hair loss. In so doing, it increases the number of healthy follicles available to produce new growth.

Many men have asked the question, “What is Finasteride?” Understanding what it is and how it works is important when deciding on a treatment plan for male pattern baldness. This condition is genetic, but is not an automatic sentence to being bald. This drug has been shown to be very effective at stopping hair loss and helping one regrow his hair.
