Treating The Most Common Type Of Hair Loss

While there are many different reasons for men to experience thinning hair. One is by far the most common type of hair loss. This is the condition known as Androgenic Alopecia, or male pattern baldness.

It is a genetic condition characterized by the formation of a hormone identified as dihydrotestosterone, DHT, that bonds with follicles and interferes with the normal growth and resting phases. Fortunately, there are several treatment options available to men suffering from this type of hair loss.

  • Minoxidil(Rogaine) is a topical solution that is applied to the scalp daily. It gets into the follicles and works to block the formation of DHT. This has been shown to not only prevent further thinning of the hair, but to reverse the process and help men grow back some of that which had been lost.It required a prescription to purchase when it was first introduced. However, today, one can purchase minoxidil over the counter at any drug store.

  • Another medical option is the prescription drug, finasteride. This medication comes in a pill form and is sold under the trade name Propecia in the US. It has other brand names in other parts of the world. This medication also blocks the formation of DHT and has been shown to both stop and reverse the progress of male pattern baldness. Finasteride can also be absorbed through the skin. It has been linked to a certain serious type of birth defect and should not even be handled by women of child bearing age, especially if they are pregnant.

  • For some, neither of these options is viable for different reasons. This typically means that they must continue to endure thinning hair or seek out other treatment options. For these men, hair transplantation is most commonly used. The most common method is to have a surgeon harvest a narrow strip of scalp from the back of the head. This is then broken down into individual follicular units and these units are implanted into the area where the hair is thinning. Being a surgical procedure, this can have its own complications, as well as taking multiple sessions in cases that are very advanced.

  • Some prefer not to seek medical intervention at all for this type of hair loss. For these men, the options are somewhat more limited. Many try to manage their thinning hair with changes in diet and exercise patterns. Dietary supplementation with specific vitamins and minerals known to be essential to healthy hair is common, and does help in some cases. There are also several herbal blends that can be applied to the scalp that have had some success at slowing or stopping the loss of hair. However, these methods seldom show any signs of reversing the process.

  • The final option for most men is to simply accept that they are going to be bald. Some go so far as to shave their head completely, scoring a preemptive strike against their fate. However, this is not a viable plan for all. Some men have heads that are shaped differently or have large ears that stick out. For these men, total baldness would be detrimental to their appearance rather than flattering.

There are several treatment options available for androgenic alopecia, the most common type of hair loss in men. It is advisable to consult a dermatologist rather than choosing treatments by trial and error. Medical options include minoxidil, finasteride, and surgical intervention through transplants.

There are also hair loss products available for men. Other options include making lifestyle changes and adding certain herbs, vitamins, and minerals to one’s diet. Some herbal remedies are also applied topically. Otherwise, men tend to either wear wigs or accept their baldness and shave their heads entirely.
