Individuals blessed with curly hair often wonder about the proper way to apply gel to the hair. The styling process, fortunately, is very easy. Here’s how to apply gel to curly hair to get the best results.
Damp Hair
Gel is best applied on damp hair so it is best to put it on the hair right after you get out of the shower. Make sure that the hair is not dripping wet by using a microfiber towel to gently squeeze water from the hair. Do not scrunch or pull at the hair since this could damage the strands and make your hair very prone to frizz.
It is important to gently remove moisture using the towel until the hair is damp and light. Apply it by putting a pea sized amount on your hand and rub between the palms to heat it up. This will make the product easier to apply.
Run the palms through the hair, making sure to go gently over areas that may show resistance to avoid tearing your hair. If the hair is long, you can apply it section by section. The final step is shaking the hair to give it a natural look.
Dry Hair
Application of gel on dry hair may be harder to do so it is best to make it a bit damp. You can do this by spraying the hair with water and spreading the moisture evenly with your hands using a combing motion.
Once the hair is all damp you can apply the gel. Do the same process as above, taking care not to pull at the hair. You can also use a wide-toothed comb to gently remove the tangles from the hair.
Adding Volume
Most guys want to avoid the wet, slicked look they get when adding gel to the hair. To add volume and create a natural bounce, you can flip your head down and apply a very tiny amount of it onto the back parts of the head. You can also let the hair air dry to give curly hair that natural lift.
Some hair gels will weight down your hair so you need to choose a lightweight one and take a small amount of it to avoid too much. If you do not know which gel to choose, read our list of the right gels for your curls.
