Natural Dandruff Treatment

Dandruff is an unsightly problem that afflicts thousands of people at times during their lifetime. Yet, dandruff can be a totally natural process of getting rid of dead skin cells. Dandruff usually consists of dry and flaky patches on the scalp. The skin that is sloughed off is usually in pieces that are large enough to be easily seen. There are several steps you might take to find a natural dandruff treatment.

The most common cause is the presence of large numbers of a yeast known as pityrosporum. Some individuals have a hypersensitivity to this organism. Dandruff is most commonly found on the scalp, but may also be found on other parts of the body. The skin may look red and inflamed, or may just be very dry.

You can do several things to help improve the condition of your hair and scalp. For example, you can make sure that you are getting recommended quantities of the vitamins A, B2, B3, C and biotin. You also need several minerals including zinc, selenium, manganese and iodine. Supplementing with fish oil and evening primrose oil are also recommended in order to provide fatty acids that you need.

Topically, you can use tea tree oil diluted in carrier oil before you shampoo. Seven drops of the tea tree oil and 1 tablespoon of the other oil is the right concentration. Apple cider vinegar applied directly to your hair and scalp and left on for an hour or so will help to remove yeast infestations. Wrap your head in a towel for warmth. Shampoo as usual after an hour. You can apply flax seed oil or grapefruit seed extract. A few drops of grapefruit seed extract should be added to shampoo. Flax seed oil can be applied directly and left on overnight.

Although you can use any of the dandruff shampoos, you may find that a shampoo that includes selenium with be most effective as an over-the-counter type shampoo. Combine these shampoos with another natural dandruff treatment and your hair and scalp will be healthier. Healthy hair with no sign of flaking and itching is better for your social life, as well.
