High maintenance haircuts/hairstyles do NOT indicate that the wearer has a lot of money. I know plenty of poor people that wear high maintenance hair. In my experience I'd say there are an equal number of poor to rich or even middle class people with high maintenance hair.

I think the author is referring to the reality of a relationship between high-maintenance hair and money. it cost to have people work your hair a simple cut cost 12 these days and if you get it cut every week even for a short style money adds up. also the shampoos conditioners sprays gels waxs colors .. all $$$$ ... but i also this some people with little cash use high-maintenance hair to give off the look of wealth
