Belgian Waffle Cornrows

The hair is cornrowed in a Belgian waffle pattern to give a distinctive shape. Cornrows are popular among African-Americans with many new designs/patterns created over the years.

I'm the braid artist who did that style. The model is a friend of mine, RZ. The first braider to do it and post something like it online is one of my African hairstyling students, Tudi Vaughan.

It took about 4 hours, and is easier than it looks. You just have to construct a special tool for it. I have instructions on my site.

With out a doubt one of the finest balanced styles I have ever seen. I have heard that this style contributes to baldness over time. Has this been your experience

To the critic, I didn't say I was the first to ever do this style. I'm the one who did this model in this photo. If you can do better, I'd certainly like to see photos of your work, as we could all learn from it.

To the one with the question about balding, that happens usually because most stylists aren't trained professional natural hairstylists. A professional understands to use the right products and level of tension for the hair texture they're working with.

In this case, the model is a Moroccan with 3/4cm spiral curls. So a light touch is needed to get the hair to "ribbon" as you work with it. An aqua hair wax should also be used for this texture. One can get away with a flex gel, but the hair will then need a spray leave-in-conditioner daily after that. A water based hair wax provides just the right amount of oil and moisture, but gives a strong hold without having to pull the hair tightly.
