There is a myth that dreadlocks are not dirty unless you are just naturally a dirty person to begin with. In reality, you can and should wash your locks at least once a week. Dreads lock-up better when they are clean. By not washing your locks, you can actually ruin your hair permanently and your dreads will look less then appealing.
Any type of hair can sport a dread. Black people’s hair naturally locks faster, but the style can be achieved in any hair texture or nationality of people. (Read How to Make & Grow Dreads.)

Tips on Styling Dreadlock
- Maintaining Dreadlocks
For many people, choosing to have dreadlocks is not just a hairstyle, but also a way of life. It is sub-culture that defines the very essence of a man. Like any item that identifies a person, be it a vehicle or home, preservation is of the utmost importance; and dreadlock maintenance is no exception. - How to Make and Grow Dreadlocks
There is no wrong or right way for anyone to achieve dreadlocks; it is a personal preference. Some methods take longer then others to achieve the final look so it depends on how fast you want to be sporting some locks. The salon method is the fastest way to achieve the locks however, not all salon methods are not 100% natural and dreadlock perms alter the hairs texture until it grows out. - How to Create Temporary Dreadlocks
If you are looking for a new hair style, but are unsure of what you want, consider temporary dreadlocks. Dreads are, most certainly, fashionable and well worth the time they take to create. Temporary dreads even allow you to have that look for one night or even a few days without the need for permanent ones. This article will tell you how to easily create them, another reason why they are a great idea. - Significance And History Of Dreadlocks
As a hairstyle, the history of dreadlocks is long and significant. Most commonly associated with the Rastafarian culture in modern times, dreadlocks have been worn dating all the way back to ancient Egypt.

"these are disgusting."
How fantastically narrow-minded, I would respect your opinion if you gave any reasons, but you didn't, you simply exposed your own mental weakness.
Those r all gr8 but the best dreadlocks are Adrienne Armstrongs (Billie Joe's wife from Green Day)they r soooooooooooooooooooo cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i would have dread in a heartbeak, or corns but.....im too baldin' lol
did you know that you get dreds from not washing your hair and letting it get all notted that is so gross its a major turn off
See this shows how ignorant a man can be. Sweety, I have locks, and trust me, I wash my hair. Read this slowly, and carefully... Those who have locks: WASH THEIR HAIR!!!, we don't roll around in dirt like filthy swine, and we keep it nourished.... read before you decide to be ignorant. ok
Why do so many without dreads think we can't wash them? I've had so many people make that assumption about them. One guy said to me, it must get real itchy since you can't wash your hair. Of course we wash our hair. That is such an annoying belief.
who ever says that you dont wash your hair with dreads must not know anyone with locs or just knows a person who is not hygenic. washing your hair is the most important part of getting your hair to loc....duh!!!
my husbands dreads are very sexy! I keep them up in different styles and yes you can wash your hair with dreads! people need to be way more open minded!
Peace & Love!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey can you do a section on Anders Friden the lead singer of in flames he has what look like dreads but a different style to most
My man has them and i think they are sexy!! and yes he washes them!!
Yes you can wash them but when they are short and premature like mine, you cant. Ive had mine for about 7 weeks and they arent to the point where they can be washed yet. I get them washed every 2 weeks when I get them redone. If I washed mine every single week, I would be paying money like crazy.
Locs can be washed every week. I am six months into locing. I wash my hair every week. I retwist every other week. Water actually speeds up the locing process.
Its like they hvn't taken a showr 4 a long time...
